Eye Cancer Spotted in Holiday Snaps

A grandmother has told of how she was able to spot a life-threatening tumour in her three year old grandson's eye. The tot had developed retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer, but was not exhibiting any symptoms of the disease. However a holiday snap of the youngster highlighted a strange shadow reflected in his eye that gave eagle-eyed gran, Beverly Warner, cause for concern.

The family had earlier consulted with an optician when one of the tot's eyes seemed to change colour. However, after his gran remembered reading about a case of retinoblastoma the family pushed to see an eye specialist who diagnosed the eye-problem. Ewan Boarder has now lost one eye to the rare retinal tumour but has survived his brush with cancer - thanks to his grandmother's quick thinking.

The rare eye cancer is thought to affect 40 people in the UK - most of whom are children under the age of five. Symptoms include squinting, inflamed eyes and white-pupils.
