Experts Issue UV Eye Damage Warning
Experts have warned thousands of holiday-makers to better protect their eyes as they head off to sunnier shores after researchers at the University of Valencia have found that beach parasols do not effectively filter harmful UV rays. A new report published in the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology claims that the beach umbrella fails to block up to 60% of damaging radiation that could cause eye disorders including cataracts.
The news has caused concerns amongst eye care experts who worry that many holiday-makers will fail to realise that their eyes are at risk of serious damage, even when shielded from sunlight by the popular beach umbrella.
The news follows earlier reports that Britons are less likely to properly protect their eyesight from UV radiation - even if they properly protect their skin by using high-factor sun cream.
