Exercise Linked to Eye Problems

New research shows that lack of exercise and increased television viewing could result in a variety of eye health problems. Researchers explain that lack of exercise could impair the function of the retina's vascular network and cause eye diseases in the same way that lack of exercise is associated with the development of cardiovascular problems.

Researchers at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology studied the relationship between lack of exercise, increased levels of television viewing and eye health problems in a large sample of people of different races. Researchers discovered that people who exercised less were significantly more likely to have developed a wider retinal calibre - an eye problem linked to diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and more.

Scientists now hope to study the subject further in order to determine the reasons behind the link between exercise and eye health. Further research will undoubtedly focus on race after scientists revealed that their findings showed that white people who spent a lot of time watching television were also at an increased risk of developing a wider retinal calibre.
