Diabetic Macular Edema Treatment Development
A new drug therapy that treats diabetic macular edema could soon be available after manufacturer, Alimera Sciences, submitted the new product to drug approval authorities. The new drug, Iluvien, is thought to treat the progressively blinding eye condition by releasing steroids into the eye.
Diabetic macular edema is thought to be one of the leading causes of vision loss in non-elderly people worldwide. The condition occurs when abnormal or faulty blood vessels leak fluid into the eye, causing the retina to swell.
There are currently no drugs approved to treat the eye disease. However, drug release systems, like Iluvien, have been approved that can alleviate the symptoms of 'back of the eye' ocular diseases.
