Computers To Detect Eye Diseases

Researchers at the University of Iowa have found that computer software programmes can be used to successfully detect eye diseases in people with diabetes. The researchers found that computers were able to process images of the eye and and detect signs of internal haemorrhaging and other symptoms consistent with eye diseases linked to diabetes. Researchers claim that rolling out the software could be a cost-effective way of screening for vision problems and catching eye diseases early.

Researchers reached their conclusions by using two computer programs, developed at the university, to analyse images of the retinas of 16,670 people suffering from diabetes. The researchers found that the computer software was able to successfully detect a range of
problems including internal haemorrhaging and deposits of excess fluid.

The research, published in the journal Ophthalmology, suggests that minimising human involvement in early stages of diagnosis in this way could allow doctors to spend more time actually treating patient..
