Children at Risk of UV Eye Damage
Eye experts are increasingly concerned that parents are failing to adequately protect their children's eyes from UV damage caused by the sun's harmful rays. A study carried out at the University of Iowa suggests that only 39% of parents ensure that their children wear sunglasses even though 85% of them understand that exposure to the sun's ultra violet rays can damage eyesight.
The findings have caused concern as eye experts believe that children are more vulnerable to UV damage than adults. Eye care professionals explain that children have larger pupils, which let in more light and UV rays, than adults. Children also have clearer lenses and are thought to be more likely to spend prolonged periods of time in direct sunlight.
Researchers claim that their findings show a disturbing trend in attitudes towards vision care that must be challenged in order to safeguard the eyesight of children.
