3-D Avatar viewings help diagnose vision impairments

We’ve all seen it advertised, many of us have probably been to see it, its viewing figures are going through the roof as it continues to be a box office hit, but a small handful of us are discovering we cannot see its 3-D features. Some people have gone to see Avatar and donned their red and green 3-D specs presuming they will be able to see over two and a half hours of 3-D action but find themselves not only disappointed but concerned.

Seeing 3-D involves the projection of two different images onto one screen, with one eye picking up one image and the other picking up a different image. The brain then amalgamates these two images creating the 3-D perception. However, with recent research revealing that over 50% of people aged 18-38 years old have eye disorders that can cause these intermittent problems when viewing 3-D; the amount of disappointed people who could be viewing Avatar and other 3-D films is alarming clear. On top of the 56% of people suffering from binocular vision problems, a further 5% suffer from lazy eye (amblyopia) and eye turn (strabismus) making over 60% of the total population of 18-38 year olds possible in having viewing problems with 3-D films. Additionally, some people may be able to see the 3-D action clearly but feel nauseous when watching it; this is something called hypersensitivity with vision motion.

However, for all of these people, all hope is not lot as optometric vision therapy provides a surgery that helps people who are stereoblind. In a world that appears to be ever-increasingly fast paced in its advancements with technology, it is alarmingly clear that our human bodies aren’t up to speed with these technological advancements. With technologists trying to advance TV’s so people can watch 3-D in their home, many people could be left behind in the modern world unless they receive therapies such as optometric vision therapy.
