Go Green with your Vegetables & save your Eyesight
We’ve all heard the old wives tale, that if we eat plenty of carrots, it’ll help us see better in the dark. Well, this may not be far from the truth according to a new study developed by the AMD Alliance International. AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) affects millions of older people, and is just one of the degenerating diseases that the eyes can suffer from. Whilst AMD, cataracts and so on may seem a fact for life, this survey reveals new hope that by merely having a healthy lifestyle, these problems could be subdued and even eradicated.
Following a growing concern that the recent recession hasn’t just affected our bank accounts but our eye care, this new survey could provide an economical, affordable alternative for those who are putting aside their eye care to save vital pennies. It is still incredibly important for people to have their regular eye tests, but by adopting the following healthy lifestyle they could avoid unnecessary eye care costs in the long run.
Eating highly nutritious and fresh vegetables such as; cucumber, peas, peppers, grapes etc; all fruits and vegetables of vivid colours could help prolong your healthy eyes. Equally, avoiding fatty foods and ones that are high in cholesterol can reduce poor eye health as the fat and cholesterol in these foods can add strain to the blood vessels which supply the eyes with all their needed nutrients and so forth. Any foods that are high in Omega-3; e.g. salmon and nuts, are beneficial for not just the eyes but the entire body. Foods that contain zinc (or even zinc supplements) are thought to help slow the development of AMD by nearly 25% over a period of 6 years.
Perhaps in such an advance medical age, we are too quick to look for a drug to cure this and an operation to cure that; that we fail to see that merely adopting a healthy lifestyle could in fact eradicate the need for many of these drugs and surgeries.
