New Dry Eye Treatment Trialled
A new treatment that could relive the symptoms of dry eye syndrome is in the advanced stages of clinical trials. The eye disease occurs when there is a lack of tears and moisture to lubricate the eye, causing the eyes to become dry and irritated.
ISTA Pharmaceuticals, who manufacture the new treatment known as the REMURA programme, claim that patients with dry eye disease currently have very limited treatment options. Treatments available to patients with dry eyes include using artificial tears and ointments, steroids, or plugging the eye's tear ducts.
However, ISTA Pharmaceuticals hopes to be able to offer a new oral drug therapy to patients following successful clinical trials of the REMURA programme. The pharmaceuticals giant expects to make 600 million dollars in prescription sales of the dry eye therapy.
