Dry Eye Risks Increased in Menopausal Women

As people grow older they are warned of many different signs and symptoms to look out for; and it’s not hard to see why they sometimes close their ears to advice from various health experts. However, leading medical editor, Dr. Brian McDonough suggests that turning a blind eye to Dry Eye symptoms could quite literally cause blindness; and he warns that throughout menopause women are at an even greater risk of developing symptoms.

Dry eye begins to occur when the eye doesn’t produce enough tears which consequently causes an itchy sensation and quite often, blurred vision. The lack of lubrication can be caused to due the lipid layer of the eye being affected as this area helps to keep the eye moist. Following several studies, Dr. McDonough also reveals that over 20% of women going through menopause are likely to develop chronic dry eye syndrome. With other contributing factors being pollen, smoke and the excessive use of contact lenses, Dr. McDonough urges people not to ignore symptoms. He suggests that if you do wake up with these symptoms it is important not to panic or pretend it is nothing as there are many simple solutions. Many medications are available over the counter in eye drop forms that are simple and efficient to use. Equally, if it has developed into a more severe case, consulting your doctor can help them to establish a treatment for you that should help re-stabilise your eyesight through prescription medications.

Like with most health warnings, they can sometimes be enough to drive you into a paranoid, over-protective frenzy, but just by knowing the symptoms of various different disorders and diseases like Dry Eye Syndrome it could help lead to a quicker and more effective treatment, saving you time and your health in the long run.
