Types of Contact Lenses
There are two broad categories of contact lenses, soft lenses and gas permeable rigid contact lenses both of which are customised to your individual prescription.
Types of contact lenses include:
- Spherical Lenses - These are used to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness.
- Bifocal Lenses - These are used to correct presbyopia by having two different prescriptions on a single lens.
- Toric Lenses - There are used to correct astigmatism as well as nearsightedness or farsightedness.
- Orthokeratology Lenses - These are designed to reshape the cornea during sleep, so that a lens does not need to be worn during the day.
It can take some time before the right type of lens for you, is found. It may be a case of trial and error as you will not know what material or solution suits you best until you have tried it. The prescription of the lens must be accurate and changes may need to be made to get the best solution for you. Finding the definitive bifocals or toric lenses, can take time, as these lenses are quite complex. Any discomfort in wearing lenses must be reported to your optician who will reassess your eyes and make the necessary adjustments to your prescription and/or lens type.
