Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses
Gas permeable contact lenses are more rigid compared with soft contact lenses and are generally smaller. These lenses are specifically designed to allow oxygen to enter the eye and are therefore considered healthier for the eye, with a lower risk of corneal irritation. However, because they are rigid, they are not as comfortable as soft lenses and adapting to them can take time, even if you are a frequent wearer and have not worn them for a few days.
Gas permeable lenses are better suited at dealing with refractive errors that require high spherical or cylindrical powers. They also have the advantage of lasting longer and being easier to look after. With care, these lenses can last for a number of years.
Advantages of Gas Permeable Contact Lenses over Soft Contact Lenses
- Can correct more vision problems
- More durable
- Do not need to be replaced as often
- Better for eye health as they allow oxygen to enter the eye
Disadvantages of Gas Permeable Contact Lenses over Soft Contact Lenses
- Take time to adapt to even after a just a few days of not wearing them
- Generally less comfortable
