Contact Lenses Recalled Over Health Fears
Johnson and Johnson's 1 Day Acuvue contact lenses have been recalled in over 24 countries following concerns that using the lenses could irritate the eyes, after some users reported stinging pains and irritation after applying the lenses. Manufacturers believe that 3-9 million lenses may have been affected whilst being produced in th Republic of Ireland.
The affected lenses are thought to have been improperly rinsed during manufacture – meaning that some potentially harmful or eye irritating chemicals could have been left on the surface of the lens.
Manufacturers claim that residual traces of manufacturing chemicals are unlikely to cause long term damage as most users would immediately remove the lenses from their eyes after experiencing an uncomfortable stinging sensation.
