Contact Lenses Best for Babies with Cataracts

A new report suggests that using surgical lens implants to treat babies with cataracts may not yield any added benefits than using contact lenses. Researchers suggest that using lens implants, instead of contact lenses, could lead to complications that could risk unnecessary damage to the eye. The report's authors are now urging medical experts to avoid using implants in infants.

Cataracts leads to the development of cloudy patches of excess protein across the surface of the eye that obscures vision and can cause blindness. Surgeons, using lens implants, can treat the progressive eye disease by using a lens implant to replace the eye's damaged lens. However, the report, published in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology, suggests that this treatment may result in complications that can reduce vision quality.

Researchers reached their conclusions by studying the eye health of 114 infants who had underwent lens implant surgery of had been given contact lenses in order to correct cataracts. They found that implant surgery was more than twice as likely to result in complications than using contacts. Researchers also found that children who had been treated with contact lenses were able to see just as well as children who had underwent implant surgery.
