Symptoms of Cataract
Initially cataract is not detected as it starts small and gradually becomes bigger until you will eventually notice it by your vision becoming unclear. Many people who are diagnosed with cataract carry on life as normal and are able to drive, use a computer, partake in hobbies and read, for a number of years before it starts bothering them. The different types of cataract have different symptoms. Subcapsular cataract is not noticed until it is very advanced. Symptoms of cataract also varies between people and may include some of the following:
- Vision - Vision becomes impaired with cataract and is akin to looking through frosted glass or fog, as everything appears fuzzy. Spots may also appear in vision.
- Daily Routine - Everyday activities become difficult due to poor sight.
- Glare, Halos & Night Vision – These may appear with light or from the sun and can cause problems driving at night.
- Colour Vision - Things may begin to appear washed and not as bright and vibrant as they used to be.
- Second Sight & Unstable Prescription - Some people can suddenly see close up when they had previously been unable to for many years. This is usually short lived as the cataract grows.
- Light Sensitivity - You may become increasingly sensitive to light.
- Double Vision - You may start to see two images.
Cataract is not a dangerous eye condition unless it is severe and becomes completely white. This overripe (hypermature) cataract can cause inflammation, pain and some people experience headaches.
If you have cataract and your vision has become so impaired, that you are struggling with routine activities or if you suffer from hypermature cataract, you may be advised to undergo cataract surgery. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, contact your local optician to book an eye test to examine if you are developing cataract or have any other eye condition, which requires attention.
