Preparation for Cataract Removal Surgery

Before you are booked in to have cataract surgery, an appointment is made to find out more information about you and your circumstances.  You will be asked about:

  • Previous eye problems & diseases
  • Your current prescription
  • Medical problems, conditions or operations you have or have had.
  • Problems with lying down, breathing difficulties and about your blood pressure.
  • Medicines and supplements you are taking
  • Allergies or any known reactions to drugs
  • Emergency contact details for your next of kin or friends.

Before undergoing cataract removal surgery, consult your eye surgeon whether you should continue your usual medications and any vitamins, mineral, food supplements or herbal remedies as normal, before and after the procedure.  You may be asked to stop taking your normal medication before the treatment day.  On the day of the procedure you may be asked not to eat or drink for a certain period of time before the procedure starts.  It is advisable not to wear any eye makeup on the day of treatment.

Eyes are usually treated individually to allow for the first eye to recover.  Usually several weeks or months are left between each operation.  Cataract removal surgery is a day procedure and usually takes less than 30 minutes.

You will be asked to sign a consent form before the procedure.  This will confirm the risks, the benefits of surgery and possible alternatives to the procedure.  By signing you are giving your permission for the surgery to go ahead.  By signing, you have outweighed the risks and benefits of cataract surgery.
