Intra Ocular Lens in Cataract Surgery

An intraocular lens (IOL) replaces the eyes normal lens, in cataract surgery.  These are made of acrylic or silicone.  They are foldable and are usually placed in this state, which reduces their size by half and allows for a smaller incision.  The lens usually has improved distant vision so that glasses or contact lenses are only required for close up work.  There are however, a number of different types of lenses, including:

  • Accommodating - These help restore some near sightedness.
  • Tinted - These reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration.
  • Posterior Capsule Opacification - Some IOL’s reduce the risk of developing this condition. See Posterior Capsule Opacification.
