Eye Test for Cataract

An optometrist or ophthalmologist will examine eyes for cataract using an ophthalmoscope, which will evaluate the condition of the optic nerve and retina at the back of the eye.  Cataract is often diagnosed in a routine eye exam as symptoms can take time to be noticed by the individual.  The eye test may include testing of visual acuity, pupil dilation and a test of eye pressure using a tonometry test.  Eye pressure is checked in case vision has become unclear due to glaucoma.  Your medical history will also be checked for indications of diabetes or other systemic disorders that may affect the development of cataract.  A slit lamp will help establish the location and size of the cataract as well as any metabolic disorders or eye injury.  Imaging may be required if the size and density of the cataract is not clear using other techniques.  Initially, cataracts can be treated by glasses or contact lenses.  Vision may also be improved by using appropriate lighting or visual aids.
