Cataract in Children, Congenital Cataract

Baby’s can be born with cataract or it can develop in early childhood.  It is not known why this occurs but some advocate that it is due to the mother having contracted German Measles (rubella) during pregnancy or due to certain metabolic disorders.  Cataracts in children may be inherited but it can also be attributed to a number of other causes including infection, diabetes, eye trauma, and eye inflammation or drug reaction.  If it is inherited, it may be a result of abnormalities in proteins, which are responsible for maintaining the transparency of the lens.
