New Cataract Treatment Trialled

A new drug that could boost the effectiveness of cataract and other lens replacement surgeries is undergoing advanced clinical trials, Omeros Pharmaceuticals has announced. Scientists explain that earlier clinical trials have shown that the new drug causes the pupils to remain dilated after surgery and reduces post-operative pain and inflammation.

Cataracts is a progressively blinding eye condition that is caused when protein growths cloud the lens of the eye and obscure vision. Eye care specialists currently treat the eye problem by surgically replacing the lens of the eye.

If approved, the drug could improve cataract surgery by ensuring that the pupils remain dilated during the procedure, which would greatly reduce the risk of the eye becoming structurally damaged during lens replacement surgery.
