New Anti-Cataract Laser Technology Unveiled

New anti-cataract technology that combines 3-D laser scanning technology and laser tissue removal has been unveiled in America. The super-precise surgical equipment could improve cataract removal surgery and patient recovery, manufacturers LensAR Inc. claim.

Cataracts is a progressive eye disorder that results in the development of cloudy patches across the lens of the eye caused by excess deposits of protein in the eye that obscure vision. Expert eye surgeons currently treat the condition by surgically removing the diseased lens of the eye.

LensAR scientists claim that early clinical trials show that the technology achieves much more precise results than can be achieved manually, even by experienced surgeons. The scientists claim that the results are markedly improved when making the initial incision, known as a capsulotomy, in the eye's lens before removing diseased tissue.

Cataracts is fast becoming a growing global health care problem and is though to affect over 1 in 3 elderly adults in the UK. Researchers hope that, following approval, use of this new technology will lead to better treatment of the condition worldwide.
