Healthy Diet Cuts Cataracts

Eating a healthy diet could be key to preventing cataracts, a new study has shown. Research published in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology reports that eating vitamin rich fruit, vegetables, grains and more significantly reduces the risk of developing age related cataracts in women. Cataracts is the leading cause of blindness, worldwide, in people over the age of 65.

Researchers studied the eye health and diets of 1,808 women aged between 55 and 86 years old. The scientists found that women who had healthy vitamin-rich diets were less susceptible to the blinding eye disease. Furthermore, the scientists found that women who ate the recommended portions of fruit, vegetables, fish, milk and meat were at significantly less risk of developing cataracts with age.

Researchers hope that their findings will encourage people who are at risk of developing the eye disease to eat better in order to help safeguard their vision.
