Cataracts Linked to Sun Exposure

Using medicine that increases the body's sensitivity to sun-light could increase your risk of developing age related cataracts, according to new research. A study due to be published in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology has found that using the sensitising medication and being exposed to the sun's harmful ultra violet rays can cause the eyes to cloud more rapidly. Researchers hope that their findings can be used to better prevent the onset of the potentially blinding eye disease in high-risk patients.

Researchers say further studies are needed in order to fully understand why sun sensitising medications are linked to the progression of the eye disease. However, experts hope that their findings can be used to help develop preventative methods, including better protecting the eye from sunlight, that would slow the progress of the disease. Cataracts are currently thought to be the leading cause of blindness in elderly people across the world.
