A Healthy Lifestyle & Cataract
Cataracts cannot be cured or prevented with medications, supplements, a healthy lifestyle or any optical device. Ophthalmologists do however recommend a healthy lifestyle, as this can be a key factor in trying to slow down cataract development.
A well-balanced diet is important for overall good health. Some research has suggested that poor nutrition and lack of certain minerals and vitamins can increase risk of developing cataract. By eating plenty of fruits and vegetables you are more likely to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs and this may affect the general health of eyes. Vitamins A, C, and E have been shown to slow down the progression of cataract. You may be advised by an ophthalmologist to take supplements. The elderly in particular may benefit from supplements, because the slow down of their metabolism will cause a loss of appetite and therefore decrease the intake of healthy foods and therefore, there may be a lack of important minerals and vitamins.
It is crucial that eyes are protected from the sun as ultraviolet light may contribute to the development of cataracts. Wearing sunglasses is a good general safety measure against eye damage from UV light rays.
A lot of research has suggested that smoking produces free radicals, which are believed to increase the risk of cataracts. A healthy lifestyle begins with no smoking.
