Video Games for Blind Children

Researchers at the University of Nevada have developed a new video game that will enable blind or visually impaired children to enjoy exercising. The VIFit project uses motion sensitive video games that issue simple audio cues for players to follow. The games will be free to download at www.vifit.org - with activities including bowling and tennis. Researchers hope that the games can be used to counter high levels of obesity amongst visually impaired children.

Researchers behind the ViFit project explain that visually impaired children have less opportunity to be as physically active as their sighted counterparts. However, trials of the VIFit game technology in New York showed that the audio-descriptive games, based on Nintendo Wii technology, could be used to achieve the same exercise levels induced by walking briskly.

The free game software is available for download now. However, players will need access to a Nintendo Wii and Windows PC with broadband.
