RNIB Campaign Raises Awareness

The Royal National Institute for the Blind is to begin a campaign to remind people just how important their eyes are in the hope to encourage even more people to visit their opticians. The Scottish division of the RNIB is to host a giant screening in the Union Square of Aberdeen in which viewers will see clips of fantastic events over the past 40 years to emphasise just how many of these events we have beheld within our own eyes. (Images include the landing on the moon and the inauguration of Barack Obama).

The charity has perhaps been boosted by its incredible achievements over the past few years; from 2008 to 2009 the amount of Scots to have eye tests was up by 100,000 (1.63 million had had them in March 2008 with 1.73 by March 2009). This shows the vast impact the campaign can have on people as they take time to consider how devastating the loss of ones eyesight really is; and with ten people a week in Scotland alone becoming a victim to vision loss, raising awareness is significantly important. The screenings are also to be shown in other Scottish cities over the next month or so; including visits to Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. All of the clips are accompanied by a speech which induces just how important our eyesight is and involves the audience in the consideration of just how devastating vision loss can be.

But the RNIB do not just stop there; they have also established a guided tour for the blind which will take them on specialist tours of some of UK’s cities. The tour is thoughtfully planned to include people will full vision too in order for them to accompany the blind but also to realise just what a tour is like for people with vision loss. The tours are accompanied by audio tapes and with the first tour set to start in Edinburgh, the RNIB have also enrolled the help of several celebrities with Carol Smilie conducting the Edinburgh one. With sheer determination the RNIB are reaching out to hundreds of people who suffer from vision loss but are also dedicated to raising awareness to those who are unaware of just what losing their sight would mean.
