New Research into Eye Disorders

Millions of pounds are to be channelled into funding new research into macular degeneration and glaucoma. The American Health Association Foundation has awarded $8 million into researching macular degeneration, glaucoma and alzhiemers. Eye care experts hope that new funding will produce new research that will improve our understanding of the conditions and result in better treatments for the potentially blinding eye disorders.

Scientists will use the funds to study the relationship between smoking and age related macular degeneration. Recent research carried out at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that people who smoked could be twice as likely to develop the progressive eye disorder and estimated that over 30,000 people in the UK may have gone on to develop the condition by smoking. Researchers will now study the effect smoking has on blood flow to the retina. Funding into this issue has been welcomed as the treatment of macular degeneration is becoming a growing global concern. Age related macular degeneration is currently thought to be the leading cause of blindness in elderly people worldwide. Scientists will also use funds to study the link between glaucoma and cholesterol.

It is hoped that new research will greatly improve our knowledge about both potentially blinding eye disorders. Developing improved treatments for the conditions would improve the quality of life of millions of people worldwide.
