New Eye Disease Drug Trialled

Researchers have trialled a new drug that could be used to treat a degenerative corneal disease that could lead to blindness or partial vision loss. Scientists in the department of ophthalmology at the Children's Hospital of Michigan were able to successfully treat four patients with chronic neurotrophic keratitis using a new drug developed by RegeneRx
Biopharmaceuticals.

Chronic neurotrophic keratitis is a rare corneal disease that occurs when corneal nerves are damaged leading to loss of sensation and function. The disease can also be caused by a strain of herpes known as the zoster virus.

The clinical trial treated four patients who had an established history of the condition and had developed painful open wounds in the eye. Scientists used drug-therapy to treat the four patients over a four period. All four patients responded positively to treatment and had no adverse side affects.

Researchers now hope to further develop the treatment in the hope that it can be used to treat this rare eye disease.
