WHO explains how Eye Glasses could help the Global Economy

WHO & Eye GlassesOn Tuesday 2nd June 2009, the World Health Organization announced that in the current state of the global economy, giving people free glasses would help save billions.

Farsightedness, nearsightedness and other visual impairments are estimated to be prevalent amongst more than 153 million people, throughout the world.  It was urged that glasses could act as a low cost intervention, costing $26 billion for eye tests, glasses and improvements in services, worldwide.

The global economy would benefit as adopting such relatively low cost provisions could make considerable savings.  There are around 8 million blind people in the world and treating repairable eyesight problems could save billions of pounds.

The savings made could help in the battle of fighting the failing economy in such difficult times as well as transform peoples lives.

There is a vast difference in eye care services throughout the world. In the less economically developed countries, there is a huge lack of training, equipment and services and it is women and older people that are most effected.  The costs involved for treating repairable blindness have been mostly felt in the Western Pacific, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Australia.  By developing the infrastructure and improving training accessibility, millions of people could have their lives transformed instead of suffering from blindness where treatments and preventative measures have been advanced.
