Prescription
Eye errors known as refractive errors, are measured in dioptres. There are four types of refractive errors; astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia and presbyopia. An eye prescription will show how many dioptres are required to improve vision. One dioptre is the same as one lens that can focus on an object that is one metre away. The higher the number the greater the refractive error. Prescriptions have three numbers on them, one for the degree of short-sightedness (minus sign) or long-sightedness (plus sign), one for the degree of astigmatism and one which indicates the axis, i.e. the direction of the astigmatism.
