Orthoptists usually work side by side with other eye care professionals and help manage a persons eye care needs. Orthoptists often work with children, screening them for common eye problems and can be based in private clinics, in schools, colleges, and universities and in NHS hospitals.
Eye conditions treated by an orthoptist include:
- Squinting
- Amblyopia (lazy eye)
- Glaucoma
- Cataract
- Eye movement problems.
Orthoptists often show their patients how to care for their eyes and what exercises they should do as well as helping them to choose contact lenses and plan treatment regimes.
