Optic Neuropathy

The optic nerve can become damaged in many ways including trauma caused by head injury, this is known as “optic neuropathy.” The optic nerve is responsible for carrying electric pulse messages from the eye to the brain. If it has become damaged, vision can be completely lost in the affected eye. The nerve can be damaged by fractures occurring in the bony canal that the nerve runs through. Sometimes, blood vessels can become inflamed in which case steroids may be prescribed to reduce the inflammation. A CT and MRI scan will show the extent of the damage and surgery can be performed. This is a serious condition where close supervision essential.
