Nystagmus

Contributed by the Nystagmus Network

Around one in 1,000 people have nystagmus, an involuntary movement of the eyes, usually from side to side. Most people with nystagmus have poor distance vision which cannot be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. Nystagmus has many causes and sometimes occurs for no known reason. It is often associated with other eye conditions. There is currently no cure.

Nystagmus generally starts in infancy, but can also begin later in life. In the UK, most people with nystagmus cannot drive. Many encounter difficulties at school, in work and in their social lives. Fortunately, many overcome these challenges and lead successful lives. The Nystagmus Network (NN) supports people with nystagmus and encourages research into this complex eye condition. NN also works with professionals in health, education and social services to improve understanding of nystagmus.

This is the involuntary incontrollable movement of the eye.  The eye often jerks from side to side, up and down and even in circular movements.
