Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration (MD, Age Related Macular Degeneration, Age Macular Degeneration, AMD or AMRD) refers to the damage of the macula of the eye. The macular is located at the back of the eye and enables us to see things in fine detail. If it becomes damaged you cannot see precisely and objects may appear dark and blurry, particularly in the central field of vision. MD can be classified as ‘Dry’ or ‘Wet.’ With dry MD the macula becomes thin and then starts to dysfunction. Wet MD can be more sight threatening but does not occur as often. Wet MD is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the macula which leak and cause scar tissue.
