Lutein

Lutein is an antioxidant, which is found naturally in the human body including the eyes. Research has shown that lutein can affect age related diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Lutein is a carotenoid and is found in the macula of the eye. The function of the macula, is to enable acute central vision. Any damage to this therefore affects straight-ahead vision and research suggests that lutein can protect the macula from potentially damaging forms of light. Because lutein is an antioxidant, it stops free-radicals from forming and neutralises the damage from them. Lutein in the macula is believed to help filter damaging blue light by absorbing ultraviolet light rays. UV light is believed to contribute to age-related macular degeneration.

Leutin is not produced in the body but is taken from the food we eat. A daily intake of fruits and vegetables containing leutin are important to health. Leutin can be found in orange fruits and leafy green vegetables and the amount can be further increased by cooking vegetables in some kind of fat as this helps with it lutein absorption.

A diet containing leutin forms part of a healthy overall diet.
