Low Vision
Low vision is a level of vision, which cannot be fully corrected with glasses. Daily life is affected as distant objects become unclear and it becomes difficult to see colours of similar tones. Low vision generally occurs with age and is a natural part of the aging process. Low vision is usually caused by eye diseases and is not a refractive error. Causes of low vision include macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Recognised early, many of these problems can be effectively treated or progression can be controlled.
Symptoms of Low Vision
- Problems with recognizing objects at a distance.
- Being unable to see near objects clearly.
- Not being able to different colours well.
Treatment of Low Vision
There are many practical aids, which can be used to help cope with low vision, from magnifiers to reading large print books. These can help you make the most of what vision you have and make life easier. As well as special glasses that magnify objects, communication aids including computer software can be very helpful.
