Keratitis
The infection or inflammation of the cornea. Keratitis can usually be effectively treated.
Symptoms of Keratitis
There are a number of symptoms and the deeper the corneal infection, the more severe the symptoms and complications are. Symptoms include:
- Severe Pain
- Eye redness
- Corneal discharge
- Light sensitivity
- Foreign body inside the eye sensation
- Tearing
- Blurred vision
- Reduction in visual acuity
- Corneal erosion
Causes of Keratitis
Keratitis can be caused by dry eyes resulting from an eyelid disorder or poor tear production. This can allow bacteria or fungi to enter the cornea and cause infection and inflammation. Causes include:
- Allergies
- Vitamin A deficiency
- Foreign object in the eye
- Intense light
- Contact lenses.
- Infections for example herpes simplex virus infection.
Herpes Simplex Virus Infection
Herpes simplex keratitis is caused by the herpes simplex infection. Often the problem is not permanently relieved and reoccurs with inflammation of the cornea, scarring and loss of vision. If the cornea becomes damaged, surgery may be performed, though this is a rare occurrence. Untreated, keratitis can lead to ulcers on the cornea, glaucoma, permanent scarring and permanent loss of vision.
Risk factors for Keratitis
- Poor diet
- Poor living conditions including crowded conditions where hygiene is poor.
- Contact lenses
- Viral infections in the body
Treatment for Keratitis
If the corneal infection is minor, it can be treated with anti-bacterial or anti-fungal eye drops. Antibiotics can be used to treat more severe Keratitis and steroids used to reduce inflammation. Over the counter medication include eye drops containing topical corticosteroids. To aid healing, it may be advisable to wear an eye patch and to stop wearing contact lenses. If there is any corneal scarring or thinning, corneal transplantation may be used to restore vision.
