Hard Contact Lenses
Contacts lenses can be categorised in many ways including whether they are ‘hard’ lenses or ‘soft’ lenses. Hard lenses were the first types of contact lenses manufactured and were made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) which is a tough, hard, material. Today, hard lenses are still available but have been softened by combining them with other plastics, which allow for the flow of oxygen to the eye and are therefore healthier to wear. These types of lenses are termed ‘rigid gas permeable contact lenses.’
