Graves Disease

Graves Disease is a common form of hyperthyroidism.  Hyperthyroidism is essentially the over activity of the thyroid gland.  Although men and women can suffer from Graves disease, it is most common amongst women 20-40 years old.

The thyroid glands produce thyroxine and triiodothyronine which function to regulate a person’s metabolism.  Your metabolism essentially controls body weight, levels of energy and also your mood.

In hyperthyroidism, too much thyroxine and triiodothyronine are released into your blood.   This can have the following effects:

  • Change in physical appearance
  • Reduction in weight
  • Hand spasms
  • Weak body muscles
  • Accelerated heart beat
  • Tiredness
  • Heat sensitivity
  • Insomnia
  • Mood swings
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Bulging eyeballs

Graves disease can be tested by blood samples, which check the levels of the hormones; thyroxine and triiodothyronine.
