Corneal Erosion
This is the breakdown of the epithelium and may occur where there has been some eye abrasion. Corneal erosion can also be a complication of Epi-LASEK surgery. The symptoms are akin to a corneal abrasion and include the sensation that there is a foreign body in the eye and the eye may tear and become sensitive to light. The cornea can wear away or erode due to surface dryness or eye injury. It is a very painful condition and can last for a few minutes up to an hour or even longer.
Healing can be speeded up and pain reduced by lubricating the eye with eye drops or ointments, a contact lens may be used to bandage the cornea. It may also help to micro-puncture the epithelium and even remove the damaged epithelium. A laser can be used on the damaged layer underneath the epithelium.
