Corneal Collagen Cross Linking
Keratoconus and corneal ectasia occur when the cornea bulges outwards and becomes shaped like a cone. This can lead to problems in vision such as astigmatism, which cannot be improved even with glasses. One option is to strengthen the cornea by cross-linking collagen. This can stop keratoconus from developing into later stages and may even reverse the corneal steepening. This treatment known as Corneal Collagen Cross Linking, uses ultraviolet light and Riboflavin to promote cross-linking between collagen fibres. Once the fibres have thickened and become more rigid, they reattach to each other and the cornea becomes both stronger and increasingly stable.
