Conjunctiva

The inner surface of the eyelid, which expands to the white part of the eyeball. It is made up of blood vessels. The secretary glands produce tears, which lubricate, clean and protect the eye. The main function of the conjunctiva is to produce mucous, to lubricate the eyeball to help it move. The mucous and tears can drain through a passage into the nose. An eye can appear red when it is irritated, injured, or if it becomes infected, because of dilated blood vessels. The conjunctiva can be lacerated with fingernails, branches or a paper edge, although it is quite tough. The conjunctiva is made up of the palpebral, bulbar, external eyeball and the fornix.
