Choroidal Melanoma
Cancer of the eye associated with the cells of the choroids. The cancer can grow in height and diameter and lead to a loss of vision and can spread throughout the body. These cancers are usually malignant. Choroidal Melanoma is often not detected until there is a loss of vision. Regular eye tests can easily detect this cancer. An ultrasound is completed which transmits high frequency sound waves to the eye and displays the internal features of the eye on a screen. The height of the tumour and its orbital shadowing, are revealed. The size of the tumour may be examined using a fluorescein angiography. Here, the eye surgeon examines how a dye injected into the arm passes through the eye.
There are various types of treatment for Choroidal Melanoma. Radiation therapy is common and destroys the tumour by producing free radicals to kill cellular DNA or induces mutations, which work slowly to destroy the tumour. Laser photocoagulation may also be a treatment option for small thin tumours and Cryotherapy can destroy very small tumours. An eye wall resection can remove tiny tumours near the surface of the eye.
