Capsulotomy
A procedure in which the capsule surrounding the eyes crystalline lens, is cut and separated from the vitreous and the aqueous. This procedure may be required in cataract surgery when a clouded lens is replaced with an artificial lens. In cataract surgery, the anterior part of the lens capsule is removed but the posterior part may be left in place. This may become cloudy after a few months or years and vision may become impaired. A posterior capsulotomy may then be completed. Capsulotomy is a YAG laser procedure, which creates a hole in the centre of the clouded posterior capsule, which lets light pass to the retina and therefore vision improves. It is a fast procedure where there is little discomfort and results are instant. There is a risk of swelling and a higher risk of retinal detachment in the future.
