Buttonhole Flap

In LASIK laser eye surgery, the flap on the cornea may get a central hole either whilst it is being cut, whilst it is being lifted back or when it is being replaced. This complication can lead to scaring and a loss of vision. A buttonhole flap may be caused by the choice of microkeratome blade, poor cutting or due to inadequate suction. There may be a heightened risk of a buttonhole flap for people with deep set eyes, particularly small eyes and unusually shaped corneas.
