Blepharitis

Blepharitis is the inflammation on the edges of the eyelids, usually affecting both eyes and causing irritation and redness.

Seborrheic Blepharitis

This is the most common type of blepharitis and symptoms include dandruff and acne. It is caused by a dysfunction of a particular gland in the eyelid and in the skin. Symptoms include, itchy eyes, a sensation that there is something in the eye, eye discharge and a burning sensation in the eye.

Staphylococcal Blepharitis

This is an infection of the eyelid, which often begins in childhood and results in crusty, scaly eyelids.  Eyes may appear red and eyelashes may fall out or become white.  Treatment is essential so that the eye is not damaged.

Combination/Mixed Blepharitis

It is possible for both Seborrheic Blepharitis and Staphylococcal Blepharitis to be present at the same time.

Ulcerative Blepharitis

This type of blepharitis can cause crusting around the eyelashes, which may cause sores that bleed when removed.  Eyelashes may fall out and the eyelid may become distorted and eyes may tear excessively and the cornea may inflame.

If blepharitis is not treated, the conjunctiva of the eye and the cornea can become uncomfortable, inflamed and infected.  Ulcers can develop and eyelids can become scarred.  The condition can be prevented by good eyelid hygiene.  Symptoms can be relieved, by using warm moist compresses.  Antibiotics and/or corticosteroids can treat any infection and relieve swelling.  Symptoms often reappear and ongoing care may be required.
