Blended Vision
The refractive error presbyopia is sometimes corrected through a system known as blended vision. The treatment involves correcting one eye to view objects mainly at distance (usually the dominant eye), but a little up close, and the other eye is treated to view objects mainly up close, but a little at distance. The brain then puts the two images together and enables you to see distance and near objects. Excellent depth of focus is experienced, together with overall visual acuity, without the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. The effects of blended vision treatment last between 5 and 10 years.
Blended vision can be achieved through laser eye surgery such as LASIK, PRK or LASEK. The shape of the cornea is changed in such a way that even though the eye has been modified for reading vision, it still retains good distance vision. Less of a ‘difference between the 2 eyes’ is made and there is less of a compromise in terms of visual quality. Presbyopia affects everyone but not everyone is suitable for correction using blended vision through laser eye surgery. An initial consultation should reveal treatment suitability. Contact your local optician or eye clinic hospital to find out if blended vision is a suitable for you.
