Allergic Conjunctivitis

An allergic reaction causing itchy eyes.  Eyes are highly sensitive and are also always exposed which makes them prone to allergic reactions.  Allergic conjunctivitis may be caused by:

  • Pollens
  • Dust
  • Molds
  • Pet Dander
  • Foods
  • Cosmetics
  • Blepharitis
  • Fabrics
  • Dry Eye Syndrome
  • Bacteria
  • Contact Lens Solution
  • Cigarette Smoke
  • Smog
  • Plants
  • Petroleum

The allergy is caused by the body's immune system overreacting to a foreign substance and trying to protect itself by releasing histamines which cause itchy eyes as well as eye swelling, inflammation, irritation and tearing.  If you have this allergy, avoid rubbing your eyes and apply cool compresses to the eyelids.  Artificial tears may relieve symptoms and remove allergens.  Antihistamines can be taken to block the release of histamine, and are often combined with decongestants.  If the allergy is sever, steroid eye drops can be prescribed.

Itchy eyes may also indicate other eye conditions and eyes should be examined to ensure that the correct cause is found.
