Acuity

This is the clearness or sharpness of vision at various distances.  The Snellen's chart is used to test acuity.  The chart has black letters, which decrease in size, line by line, corresponding to the distance at which that line of letters is normally visible.  The chart and the letters are named after the Dutch ophthalmologist Hermann Snellen (1834-1908) who devised this technique.  It measures how well people see and comes from the Latin "acuitas" which means sharpness.
