Types of Astigmatism

In the normal eye, the cornea and the lens each have a convex, perfectly spherical surface but, if you suffer from astigmatism, this is not the case.  A high degree of astigmatism can lead to poor vision due to errors in the amount your eye bends light rays.  When light comes in to the eye, it fails to focus sharply on the retina of the eye.  Instead of then forming a clearly focused image, a blurry image in created on the retina.

There are two types of astigmatism, which are determined by the shape of the cornea or lens:

Regular Astigmatism

This is a type of astigmatism when both sides of the oval shape of the cornea are the same shape and therefore the curve of the cornea or lens is equal throughout.

Irregular Astigmatism

This is a type of astigmatism when each side of the oval shape of the cornea are different and therefore the curve of the cornea or lens is different throughout.
